Dana White isn’t bending on the company’s initial goals for the division, even after Sergei Pavlovich and Tom Aspinall’s interim heavyweight title bout.
The UFCCEO claims that Jon Jones vs. Sparpe Miocic is still up for grabs, therefore Aspinall, the new interim champion, will have to wait it out.
Dana White still stuck on Jones vs. Miocic for next UFC heavyweight title bout
Dana White gave an explanation of why Jones vs. Miocic is still the fight to make during his post-event media scrum. The boss claims that at their previous lunch, Miocic only wanted to finalize his unresolved business with Jones.
After Aspinall’s victory, Dana White responded to reporters about Jones and Miocic, saying, “You do those two.” (transcript via MMA Junkie).
Both of those people deserve to fight. They want to fight like that. I adore the fact that Jon Jones flew straight to Los Angeles after learning of his injury and its severity, had surgery, and is currently receiving physical treatment for his injuries.
Dana White continued by emphasizing how well the two men’s storylines fit together.
This is one of those matches where the greatest martial artist of all time is against the best heavyweight of all time. They want to fight like that.
The fight is the rational thing. That’s the fight that ought to take place.
Tom Aspinall issues plea to Jon Jones
Aspinall wants the opportunity to take on Dana White, the greatest martial artist of all time. He started his campaign in hopes of getting this chance, which he believes he is well deserving of.
Additionally, I’ve seen Jon complimenting me on a podcast. At his post-UFC 295 press conference, Aspinall commented, “It’s really nice” (transcript via MMA Junkie). It’s always pleasant to hear positive things spoken about you, of course, but it’s much more pleasant coming from someone I greatly like.
True, I’m grateful, Jon. Jon, just give me the chance. Give it to me. Grant me my fantasy battle. Not at all? I recently realized my dream. Grant me my fantasy battle. Please, let me now defend my heritage.
Jones has zero interest in facing the current crop of talents
Jones’s reluctance to take on the current group of opponents may present Aspinall with a dilemma. This is what he stated in an interview six months prior, well in advance of the formal declaration of his championship matchup with Miocic.
For me, the fight with Stipe [Miocic] will be sufficient. After defeating Stipe Miocic, I don’t think I really have anything to prove, he stated. I’ve spent a lot of time playing this game. In combat years, I’m an elderly man. I have been exercising for an extended period of time.
got a few minor wounds. All I really want is to be here. Desire to be present for my family and my children I am content with the fact that I can see [my career] ending very soon. I’m rather pleased with my work.
What happens to Aspinall now?
It appears like Aspinall will have to wait things out for the time being based on Dana White’s objectives. However, the 30-year-old fighter will be OK, as the boss said.
In response to a question about Aspinall’s future, White said, “We’ll see how that plays out.” We’ll have to wait and see. [Aspinall] jumped into this fight without warning.
He obviously looked fantastic. He has more than enough money to take a short break. Let’s see.
Exactly a year after losing to Curtis Blaydes via TKO, Aspinall triumphed against Marcin Tybura via stoppage. He raised his record to 14-3 and is currently on a two-fight winning streak after his decisive victory against Pavlovich on Saturday.
